Case 1. Energy Supply Diagnostic Review
Case 2. Energy Expert Consulting Services
Case 3. Energy Supply Strategy

EOI was retained by the local campus of a large university system to identify opportunities to lower their energy costs. Although client was located in a state that had not restructured its electric sector, it felt there were still potential opportunities it could not identify on its own. Client was forward-looking and had already renegotiated its gas supply contracts, but lacked expertise in electric supply and regulations.

SERVICES PROVIDED BY EOI

EOI performed an Energy Supply Diagnostic Review for this one specific campus. Specific items reviewed included:
Evaluation and identification of preferred tariff options
Estimate of savings opportunities associated with improved load management practices
Assessment of virtual aggregation opportunities
Supply Chain review of internal procurement practices and their impact on total expenditures

RESULTS

Savings opportunities were identified which reduced total annual electric expenditures by 15%. EOI also met with local utility company account executive on client's behalf to begin review and implementation of savings opportunities. Additional information is available in our project demo.

EOI was retained by a planned 6,000 room hotel (the world's largest) to assist its design and construction team to incorporate a range of energy management solutions. EOI assisted in the evaluation of the financial and regulatory issues associated with the installation of a 138 kV customer owned substation and underground service required by client to eliminate the eyesore of overhead facilities on the hotel premises. EOI supported the client in its direct negotiations with the local utility.

SERVICES PROVIDED BY EOI

EOI provided Energy Advisory Services for this client. On behalf of the client we worked with the local utility to:
Quantify tariff savings opportunities to purchase power at higher voltage level to defray cost of customer-owned substation
Negotiate favorable interpretation of utility line extension policy on issues such as Standard Facilities Charges, Contribution in Aid of Construction (CIAC), and O&M requirements associated with underground service to the premises
Negotiate maintenance and service agreement with local utility including service restoration guarantees and Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) capability

RESULTS

Favorable contract terms were negotiated with local utility and the customer substation was proved to have a positive payback even though it was originally assumed it would cost additional money to minimize the eyesore of overhead facilities. In addition, service restoration guarantees were incorporated into the final agreement, which satisfied the client's extreme sensitivity to electric service interruptions.

Client was a large property management firm with operations in multiple states but especially strong in the California market. The client's diversified portfolio included properties served by both investor-owned, and municipal utilities, some of which were deregulating and some of which were not. Client requested a review of its portfolio and an identification of what savings opportunities could be identified related to electric supply.

SERVICES PROVIDED BY EOI

EOI provided Energy Supply Strategy services for this client. This involved:
Reviewing energy expenditures to develop a detailed understanding of the client portfolio's energy parameters including consumption profiles, service parameters, electric supply agreements, and unique sensitivity on the part of properties or individual customers to power quality or other service requirements
Meeting with the client to define their energy related objectives, and their tolerance and exposure to price volatility and their potential need for other energy related services
Developing a Comprehensive Energy Supply Strategy. This involved tariff optimization strategies, quantification of opportunities from shopping the competitive energy market, and a review of procurement practices

RESULTS

Specific opportunities were identified which could potentially reduce client electric expenditures by over 20% annually. These opportunities were assessed against the client's defined objectives and a comprehensive strategy was implemented which was tailored for both deregulated and still-regulated markets.
